On December 29, with Iran threatening to close off the Strait of Hormuz, the White House announced the signature of a US$29.4 billion Foreign Military Sales contract to supply 84 new Boeing F-15SA Eagle strike fighters to the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) and to upgrade the RSAF’s 69 existing F-15Ss to SA status. Deliveries of the new-build aircraft are scheduled to begin in early 2015 and upgrades to the RSAF’s existing F-15s – including fitting the Raytheon APG-63(V)3 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar – are expected to begin in mid to late 2014...

Australia: Suppliers chosen for Project Overlander

On December 12, Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare announced the selection of Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles – Australia (RMMV-Australia) as preferred tenderer for Project Overlander’s Land 121 Phase 3B that calls for the delivery of up to 2,700 protected and unprotected medium and heavy vehicles, with options for a further 1,000 unprotected vehicles under Land 121 Phase 5B.

Poland: Multi-role helicopters - prior notice

The Polish Ministry of Defence, acting through the Armaments Inspectorate, has issued an advance notification of a pressing requirement for multi-role helicopters for use by the Polish armed forces. The present procurement program covers the supply of a total of 26 machines, together with a comprehensive logistics and training package.

Brazil: Three British OPVs ordered

On January 2, the UK’s BAE Systems announced that the Brazilian Navy had signed a contract, valued at £133 million (US$205.2 million), for the delivery of three 90m, 2,200t Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), plus training and ancillary support services. The contract also includes a Manufacturing License to enable at least five further OPVs to be constructed in Brazil, at a yard to be nominated by the Navy.

Sweden: 48 armoured BvS-10 MkIIBs to be ordered

On January 5, the FMV Defence Materiel Administration decided to procure the first 48 Armoured All-Terrain Vehicles for the Swedish Army from Sweden’s BAE Systems Hägglunds, rather than Singapore’s ST Kinetics. Hägglunds was proposing its BvS-10 MkIIB.
