Cancellation looming for Typhoon Tranche 3B

The European defence budget crunch is already beginning to bite into the Eurofighter Typhoon program, which originally had been planned to deliver 620 combat aircraft to the air forces of Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK. Including 112 Tranche 3A aircraft, the total ordered to date by the four air forces is 472 (Germany 143, Italy 96, Spain 73 and the UK 160). On July 23, the UK’s QinetiQ defence research company landed its solar-powered Zephyr High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at the US Army’s Yuma Proving Ground, in Arizona, after a record-shattering flight of 14 days and nights.

Finland: Anti-tank weapons

The Finnish Ministry of Defence has announced that it is seeking suitably qualified companies capable of supplying the Finnish Army with man-portable anti-tank and anti-structures weapons. The requirement calls for the proposed weapons system to be shoulder-fired and disposable.

India: Another 57 Hawk jet trainers

At press time, the Indian Defence Ministry was expected to order a further 57 BAE Systems Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs), under a contract valued at Rupees 9,400 crore (£1.3 billion / US$2 billion), for license production at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL).
